On the Stones of Florence — The Family That Designed a System
Before an Empty Niche
Behind the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, in the innermost room of the Medici Chapel — the vast octagonal hall called the Cappella dei Principi — I stood for a long while. The walls were sheathed entirely in porphyry and lapis lazuli and jasper, an inlay cut and fitted stone by stone from Egypt, from the far side of the earth. It was a room that had gone almost to the very limit of what money can do.
And yet, at the heart of all that splendor, something was missing.
The tombs were there. The sarcophagi of six grand dukes held their places. But above them, in the niches meant to bear the bronze statues that would look down over each tomb, four of the six had never been filled. Only two statues were ever set in place; the other four niches remain empty. A room clad in the most costly materials in the world had stopped, its protagonists' seats left vacant. Because the money ran out. Because the line came to an end.
Before these empty places I found myself seized by a strange question. What kind of family, exactly, were the Medici? We usually call them "the patrons of the Renaissance" — the people who commissioned paintings from Botticelli and raised Michelangelo in their own home. That is not wrong. But it does not explain this empty niche. How did one family rise from provincial money-changers to produce popes and a queen of France, to own a city in all but name for three hundred years, and then vanish, leaving behind an unfinished mausoleum?
Searching for an answer, I arrived at a single thought. The Medici were not a family that invented a new idea. They were a family that designed a new system. Understanding what that system was is the first button of this whole journey.
The People Who Turned Money into Information
The true starting point of the Medici was neither painter nor sculptor. It was a bank.
In 1397, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici founded a bank in Florence. He did not step to the front of politics. Quietly, almost invisibly, he amassed wealth. His decisive move was to become the bank that managed the funds of the papacy. In medieval Europe the largest and most stable client was the Church. To become the Church's principal bank was to stand at the very center of European finance.
But here lies a paradox. The Church forbade lending money at interest — usury — as a sin. "Do not charge your brother interest," the teaching went. So how did the Christian Medici make their fortune through banking?
The key was the bill of exchange. It looks like a mere instrument of remittance, but it was in fact an invention that changed the nature of money itself. It detached money from lumps of metal and made it credit on paper — made it information.
It worked like this. A Florentine merchant needs to buy wool in London. To load a sack of gold coins onto a cart and cross the Alps was close to suicide — bandits, loss, weight, slowness. So the merchant deposits florins (the Florentine gold coin) with the Medici bank in Florence and receives a slip of paper: "Pay this person, at the London branch, in pounds." Carrying only the paper, he travels safely to London and there receives the local currency. The gold stays in Florence; only the person and the information move.
Here the Medici genius is hidden. Between paying in Florence and being paid in London, weeks or months pass. In that interval the Medici could put the money to work. And into the exchange rate they applied, they folded a thin margin of profit. On its face it was a "currency-exchange fee"; in substance it was an interest-bearing loan. The Church forbade interest but regarded exchange gains as legitimate commerce. Through this gap in the form, the Medici lawfully circumvented the ban on usury.
To treat money not as physical substance but as credit and information — this is the deepest conception at the root of modern finance. Money is not the weight of metal but the record of trust. The Medici stood at the summit of that idea.
To be precise, of course, neither the bill of exchange, nor double-entry bookkeeping, nor the branch network was first invented by the Medici. Such elements were already scattered through the Italian merchant cities. Double-entry bookkeeping was long used within Italian merchant culture and only set down in a book by Luca Pacioli in 1494; even before the Medici, great banks like the Bardi and the Peruzzi were running bills of exchange.¹ The true achievement of the Medici was not invention but systematization — combining the scattered parts into one working machine and operating it reliably across all of Europe.
Risk Diversification Learned from a Predecessor's Collapse
Here the Medici cleverness shows most plainly.
Just before the Medici, the Bardi and Peruzzi banks lent enormous sums to King Edward III of England and, when the king refused to repay, went bankrupt one after another in the 1340s. They had staked everything on a single vast debtor and were ruined. The Medici watched this failure closely.
So they spread the risk. They did not stake all on one sovereign but scattered it across many clients and many branches. And each branch — London, Bruges, Venice, Rome — was run not as a wholly owned outlet but as a kind of partnership in which the local manager held a stake. Because his own money was on the line, the manager ran his branch prudently, and because each branch was legally separate, the failure of one did not spread to the whole. It was a structure close to the modern holding company and franchise, with resilience built in.
They had learned by watching a fallen predecessor — a pattern that recurs throughout the history of business. The one who first cuts the path collapses; the follower who watched refines the system and seizes the world. The Medici were geniuses not of invention but of operation.
The Wheel That Turned Wealth into Power
But if the Medici had been merely clever bankers, we would not remember them now. Their true invention lay elsewhere: a system for converting wealth into every other kind of capital.
Giovanni's son, Cosimo de' Medici, poured his vast fortune not into self-display but into things the whole city could enjoy — the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Convent of San Marco, a library opened to the citizens. He spent money so that it looked not like power but like a gift. The citizens felt, "Thanks to that family, our city grows beautiful." And so wealth became patronage, patronage became prestige, prestige became power, and power in turn protected the wealth. It was a single self-reinforcing wheel.
Cosimo turned this wheel invisibly. He refused official titles, dressed plainly, mingled without airs among citizens in the street. Florence was a proud republic, and to declare oneself king invited backlash. So he chose the path of holding power without appearing to hold it. A generation later, his grandson Lorenzo the Magnificent turned the same wheel in the opposite way — brilliantly. He was a poet and a diplomat, and he took Michelangelo into his house and raised him like family. If Cosimo was strong because he was unseen, Lorenzo was loved because he shone.
Here I see the essence of the Medici system. What they handled was not money but a meta-resource — money that could be changed into anything else. A device that converted wealth earned in finance into patronage of art (cultural capital), into support of citizens (political prestige), and finally into the seats of popes and princes (the capital of power). The flowering of Renaissance culture was the surplus energy thrown off as this great engine of conversion ran.
And let me set down one thing in advance. The moment we call something "capital," it becomes an object to be operated, accumulated, withdrawn. The Medici were geniuses at translating the world into the language of capital. At the end of this book I will return to this point — to ask, of us who have come to call even our relationships "social capital," what the Medici bequeathed.
When the Wheel Stops
The height of power was also the beginning of its fracture.
While Lorenzo lived, the family seemed unshakable. In 1478 a rival house, the Pazzi, plotted with even the tacit consent of the pope. During Easter Mass, inside the Duomo, Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano were stabbed. Giuliano died on the spot; Lorenzo, wounded, survived.² The conspirators believed the citizens would turn against the Medici, but what erupted in the streets was "Palle! Palle!" (Long live the Medici). The prestige built up over decades since Cosimo became, before the blade, a shield that guarded the family. It was the most dramatic moment in which that wheel — from wealth to patronage, from patronage to prestige — ever turned.
Afterward the Medici climbed even to the summit of religious power. Lorenzo's son Giovanni became Pope Leo X, and his cousin Giulio became Clement VII. But the stronger the light, the deeper the shadow. To raise funds for rebuilding St. Peter's Basilica, Leo X sold indulgences on a grand scale — and that was precisely the fuse that set off Martin Luther's Reformation in 1517. The family that made the Renaissance bloom, paradoxically, pulled the trigger that split Western Christianity in two. And in 1527, under Clement VII, the Sack of Rome ended the glory of Renaissance Rome.
The family's end was quieter. In 1737 the last grand duke, Gian Gastone, died without an heir. His sister, Anna Maria Luisa, was childless too. Tuscany passed, without regard to the Medici's will, to the House of Habsburg-Lorraine through a bargain among the great powers over territory. A family of more than three hundred years ended in a generation of a childless brother and sister.
It is often said that the enormous cost of the Cappella dei Principi ruined the family. Standing before the empty niche, one is tempted to feel so. But look precisely, and the direction of cause is slightly different. The decisive cause of the fall was the failure of succession, and behind it lay repeated intermarriage that penned the bloodline within a narrow range to keep power. And deeper still lay a vast current: after the sixteenth century, the center of the world economy shifted from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, and inland cities like Florence drifted to the margins. The engine that generated wealth was cooling.
The Cappella dei Principi was less the cause of ruin than evidence of the pride to which a declining family clung to the last. There is a striking contrast. Right beside the same building stands the New Sacristy designed by Michelangelo — a restrained room of gray stone and white marble, a small space with only a few sculptures, judged incomparably greater in art than the money-drenched Cappella. Cosimo and Lorenzo, while vitality lasted, invested money in the future — in artists and talent. The declining later dukes buried money in the past, in adorning tombs. Where a system spends its money reveals its health.
Again, Upon Those Stones
I left the Cappella dei Principi and returned to the nave of San Lorenzo. Lift your eyes, and at every corner of the ceiling the Medici arms are set — six red balls on a field of gold. A mark that says, wordlessly and everywhere, whose church this was.
Upon those stones I thought again about what the Medici left to humanity. Their true legacy was not the patronage of particular works but the model itself — of converting wealth into culture, and culture into power. This model became the standard that Europe's princes and nobles afterward rushed to imitate. And further still, this grammar of conversion — this way of thinking that reckons everything as capital to be operated — became, for the five hundred years that followed, the logic by which the world was organized.
The Medici were a family that designed a system. The genius of that design, which lifted a single city onto the stage of the Renaissance, and where it finally flowed — to see these two together is the first step of a journey that begins upon the stones of Florence. In the next chapter I go to a single year, 1492 — the year Lorenzo died, the hinge at which the whole center of gravity of the world began to shift.

The Road Running South
Drive south from Florence, and before the hills of Chianti begin you come to the Antinori winery, a modern building sunk as if buried into the Tuscan ridge. Its very address was "Via Cassia per Siena" — the Cassian Way toward Siena. I paused for a moment before that name. The Cassian Way, an old road laid by the Romans. This road runs down to Siena, and past Siena it leads at last to Rome. South, and ever south.
Glass of wine in hand, looking out at the vineyards, I thought about roads. Every road leads somewhere, and its end is usually toward the center of an age. Roads that led to Rome, roads that gathered into Florence. But how does an age end, in which one city, one sea, was the center of the world? How does the center of gravity shift?
The answer to that question is compressed into a single year: 1492. As it happens, the very year Lorenzo the Magnificent — whom we met in the last chapter — died.
Doors Closed and Opened in One Year
In 1492, three events interlocked.
In January, Granada, at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, fell. With it, the Reconquista — the long war to take back land from Muslim rule, more than seven hundred years in the making — was completed. The Catholic monarchs of Castile and Aragon at last held the whole peninsula.
In April, in Florence, Lorenzo the Magnificent died at forty-three, the man who symbolized the golden age of the Renaissance. A contemporary wrote that "the peace of Italy was buried with him." Indeed, two years after his death France invaded Italy, and the balance among the city-states he had maintained collapsed.
In August, under the patronage of those very Catholic monarchs who had taken Granada, a navigator from Genoa set sail into the Atlantic. Christopher Columbus. He believed that by sailing west he would reach Asia. In October he made landfall on an island in the Caribbean. He believed until his death that it was Asia, but that voyage created the first lasting link between Europe and the Americas.
It is important to pause here over the fall of Granada. Spain, the instant it ended a seven-hundred-year war of reconquest, turned that military and religious energy immediately toward conquest across the ocean. The reconquista led straight into the conquista. In the same year one door closed and another opened. The drive of conquest that had faced inward across the peninsula now faced the outward ocean.
So 1492 is no mere date. It is the hinge at which one world closes and another opens — the year the age of the Mediterranean set and the age of the Atlantic began to rise. And at one end of that hinge lies the death of Lorenzo — the end of Florence's golden age.
The Center of Gravity Shifts
Why is this transition so decisive? Because here the fate of Florence and the Italian city-states was sealed.
The axis of the medieval and Renaissance economy was the Mediterranean. Spices and silk from the East passed through the Levant into Venice and Genoa, and that wealth flowed into the finance and wool industry of inland cities like Florence. The Medici bill-of-exchange network we saw in the last chapter was built upon this Mediterranean trading web. Florence was the financial heart of that system.
But when the Atlantic opened, everything turned over. The new wealth no longer passed through the Mediterranean. The silver and gold of the Americas, the new routes around Africa to Asia — these fell into the hands of the nations facing the Atlantic: Spain and Portugal, soon the Netherlands and England. The Italian city-states were shoved overnight from the center of the world economy to its margin. Geography changed, and power changed.
Let me set down in advance a current that will grow clearer later. In 1545 a vast silver mine is discovered at Potosí in Bolivia. In 1571 Spain founds Manila in the Philippines and begins the galleon trade. American silver crosses the Pacific and flows into China, and Ming China reorganizes into an economy that collects taxes in silver. This great river of silver we will meet again later. What matters now is that the river no longer passed through Florence.
Florence remained a city of culture, keeper of the Renaissance's glory. But it lost forever its place as protagonist of economy and finance. The decline of the Medici we saw in the last chapter — the bank tilting, the family withering at the edge of the Atlantic age — was one part of the great current that began in 1492. Not because they were incompetent, but because the very system that had lifted them to the summit was being drawn away from the center of the world. However refined a system, when the ground it stands on is pulled away, it sinks with it.
Seafaring Was Not the Child of the Renaissance
Here one enchanting but inaccurate story must be set right before we go on.
The Age of Discovery is often spoken of as a product of the Renaissance — as if Europe, armed with rational spirit and science, went out to sea. But reckon honestly, and much of the practical technology that made the great voyages possible was not the child of the Renaissance.
The compass was invented in China and passed through the Islamic world into Europe; it was used from the Middle Ages, unrelated to the Renaissance. The lateen sail, which let ships advance even against the wind, came from Arab and Mediterranean seafaring traditions. The Portuguese caravel that crossed the oceans was Iberian practical shipbuilding, not a product of Florentine humanism. The astrolabe, an instrument of celestial observation, originated in ancient Greece and was refined by the Islamic world.
So to say "the key instruments of the great voyages came from the Renaissance" is inaccurate. These instruments owe more to the accumulated heritage of Islam, China, and antiquity.
If the Renaissance contributed anything, it was not a tool but a frame. Among the rediscovered ancient texts, Ptolemy's Geography was reintroduced to Europe in the early fifteenth century, and the idea of mapping the world by latitude and longitude revived. Columbus too believed "sail west and reach Asia" on the basis of Ptolemy's (in fact mistaken) estimate of the earth's circumference. It is true that the Renaissance's revival of the classics supplied part of the intellectual frame of navigation. But that is as far as it goes.
This distinction may seem trivial. But I want to make it a discipline I will keep throughout this journey: to stop before enchanting narratives — "the Renaissance gave birth to the modern age," "Europe opened the world by its own genius" — and to reckon the boundary of fact. That seafaring was not the child of the Renaissance but the common heritage of many civilizations converging is a small preview of the larger claim toward which this whole book moves: that no civilization ever leapt alone.
So the more precise expression is this. Seafaring was not the "product" of the Renaissance but a "parallel phenomenon" that shared its age. If the Renaissance widened the space of the mind by reviving the past (the classics), the great voyages widened the space of geography. The two were not parent and child bound by direct causation but different expressions of the same energy by which Europe reached beyond the limits of the Middle Ages toward the outside. And, tellingly, the place that led the great voyages was not Florence, where Renaissance art was in full bloom, but the peripheral Iberia. That the center of culture and the center of expansion were different itself tells us their causation was not simple.
Again, on the Cassian Way
Draining my glass, I got back in the car. Following the Cassian Way down toward Siena, I thought about 1492.
That year, in Florence one age died, and in the Atlantic another was born. That Lorenzo's death and Columbus's departure fell in the same year is, of course, coincidence. But it is a coincidence that reveals the deep rhythm of an age — the summit of one world and the beginning of another meeting in the same year.
This road runs south, toward Rome — the center to which all roads once led. But after 1492, the world's true roads no longer gathered toward Rome or Florence. Those roads reached out from the docks of Lisbon, from the port of Seville, across the Atlantic. And the end of those roads — as we will see in the coming chapters — touches at last, eastward, the shores of Japan and Korea and Ming China.
That the center of gravity shifts means not merely that a wealthy city changes. It means the world is rewoven. Beyond the door opened in 1492, humanity comes for the first time to live within a single connected system — a world where a decision in Lisbon reaches the fate of Beijing, where the silver of Potosí returns to the shores of Korea as a sword. To trace that web is the journey from here on.
Printing and Prester John — What Flowed, and What an Illusion Bore
Climbing the Stairs
In the precincts of San Lorenzo stands the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, designed by Michelangelo. Enter, and the famous staircase strikes the eye first — gray stone that seems to flow down like lava. Climb it, and a long reading room opens, lined on both sides with the manuscripts the Medici gathered.
In that room I thought of the world before printing. These manuscripts were all copied by hand. A single book took a monk months, years. So books were extremely dear, and only families like the Medici could own a library. Knowledge was locked in the studies of a few.
But around the time this library was being built, across the Alps something was happening that would overturn all of it. Printing. And following the roots of that printing, one arrives, unexpectedly, in East Asia — and there, in the Korean Peninsula. An enchanting story. But the more enchanting, the more slowly I must walk.
Who Was First — What Is Certain
First, let me set down what is certain. And that certainty, unexpectedly, is rooted most deeply in the Korean Peninsula.
The oldest surviving woodblock print in the world is in Korea. The Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light (Mugujeonggwang Dae Darani-gyeong). In 1966, while repairing the Seokgatap pagoda at Bulguksa in Gyeongju, it was found inside as a scroll of sutra. Judging from the circumstances of the reliquary found with it and the vocabulary used in the text, it is taken to have been printed in Silla no later than 751, when the pagoda was built — roughly between 704 and 751. That the paper's composition and the script are those of eighth-century Silla is the basis for a Silla origin.¹ It is more than a century earlier than China's Diamond Sutra (868), the oldest print bearing a clearly recorded date.
Yet here too one must be honest. There is no complete international consensus that this Dharani is the world's oldest. Because the date and printer are not fixed by inscription, Chinese and Japanese scholars dissent, and the attempt to register it with UNESCO's Memory of the World has not yet succeeded. Moreover, the very origin of woodblock printing as a technology goes back to Tang China, and earlier Chinese finds exist — a mid-seventh-century dharani from Xi'an, a Lotus Sutra print from around 690–699 in Turfan.²
So the most precise expression is this. The invention of woodblock printing as a technology is rooted in China, but the oldest surviving physical woodblock print is Silla's Great Dharani Sutra. "The invention of a technology" and "the oldest surviving physical object" are different questions, and to distinguish them is honesty. I will not inflate, for the sake of our pride, "Korea invented printing." There is no need to inflate. The fact itself is weighty enough.
And the fact remains this clear. Korea holds both the oldest surviving woodblock print (the Great Dharani Sutra, eighth century) and the oldest surviving movable metal-type print (the Jikji, 1377). In the history of the human art of printing, the two ends of the oldest surviving objects — woodblock and metal type — both remain on the Korean Peninsula. Clay type was made by Bi Sheng of the Northern Song in the eleventh century, but it was Goryeo that put metal type to practical use and left the oldest surviving print. The Jikji Simche Yojeol (1377) precedes Gutenberg's 42-line Bible (1450s) by about seventy years. That Goryeo was the unrivaled pioneer of metal type is beyond doubt.
Here I must honestly note one case. In Korea there was much excitement over an artifact called the Jeungdoga-ja, claimed to be metal type of 1239, 138 years before the Jikji. If genuine, it would be a discovery that rewrites world history. In 2017 the Cultural Heritage Administration decided not to designate it a Treasure. But to read this as "confirmed a forgery" is inaccurate. The scientific analyses of authenticity diverged, and public recognition was withheld because authenticity could not be confirmed — not because it was declared fake. In fact the authenticity dispute is not over, and it has recently become an issue again.³
I set down this case on purpose. That the more a story gives us pride, the more strictly — and, until a conclusion is reached, the more cautiously — it must be handled, is the discipline I mean to keep throughout this journey. The Jeungdoga-ja is not proven a forgery; it is an artifact of undecided authenticity. Then rather than lean the argument on an undecided date, it is better to stand on the firmly established fact — the Great Dharani Sutra and the Jikji. True pride stands on confirmed fact. And by that fact alone, Korea's history of printing is deep enough.
Did It Flow? — The Boundary of Plausibility and the Unproven
Now we reach the most enchanting question. Was Goryeo's metal type transmitted to Gutenberg?
Before this question many a Korean heart quickens. Mine too. But honestly, this is not a proven fact but a plausible hypothesis. In the scholarly phrase, there is as yet no smoking gun.
The circumstances supporting transmission are certainly rich. East Asia was plainly ahead in the tradition of printing — the oldest surviving objects, whether woodblock or metal type, are on the Korean Peninsula — and the thirteenth-century Mongol Empire bound Eurasia into one and threw open the roads of East-West exchange. Given that other technologies — paper, gunpowder, the compass — all flowed from East to West, it is hard to see the concept of type printing alone as an exception. Some scholars go a step further and hold that the burden of proof lies rather with those who claim "Europe invented it wholly independently."⁴
There was even a concrete channel of transmission. The close relationship between Goryeo and the Mongol Empire, which we will meet elsewhere in this book. King Chungseon of Goryeo built a study called the Manggwondang in the Yuan capital, Dadu (Beijing), and exchanged learning with the finest scholars of the Yuan. That Goryeo royalty handled books and scholarship at the heart of the empire shows that an environment in which knowledge and technology could flow really existed.
But — here we must stop. "The channel was open" and "it actually passed through that channel" are different matters. Environmental plausibility is high, but direct evidence of actual transmission (who, when, by what route) is still lacking.
Tellingly, even one study often cited in Korea as strong grounds for transmission does not escape this distinction. In 2001, Paul Needham of Princeton and Blaise Agüera y Arcas analyzed Gutenberg's prints in detail and proposed that, contrary to the standard account (making copper matrices with a steel punch to duplicate type endlessly), he may have used a method of casting each type in a newly made mold each time — closer to sand-casting.⁵ Because the same letter differed subtly each time. This, they said, connects with Goryeo's sand-mold casting.
But look precisely, and what that study said goes only as far as "Gutenberg may have used a casting method different from the standard account." "He learned it from Goryeo" is a separate, larger leap. That he used a sand mold is not proof he was taught it in Korea. Faced with a similar technical problem, one can arrive independently at a similar solution.
So the most honest expression is this. That Goryeo was the pioneer of metal type is firm fact. That the concept of Eastern printing flowed into Europe through Eurasian exchange is highly plausible, and gaining persuasiveness. But that it was transmitted directly to Gutenberg is, as yet, unproven. I will not blur this boundary. The moment it is blurred, the greater truth — the just insight that East Asia's contribution to human civilization has been undervalued — comes to be doubted along with it.
An Illusion That Bore the Real — Prester John
If technology flowed from East to West, what flowed the other way? What Europe held toward the East was not technology but an illusion. And that illusion bore a reality that changed history.
Prester John. A figure at once priest and king. Medieval Europe believed that somewhere beyond the Islamic world lay a powerful Christian monarch's kingdom. In the twelfth century a letter said to be his arrived among Europe's princes, and this legend spread explosively. A forged letter, of course. It described a paradise-like kingdom overflowing with gold and jewels, with a fountain of eternal youth.
Europe clung to this illusion for a desperate reason. The Crusades were faltering, and to east and south lay Islam. In such a situation the belief that "beyond Islam there is a powerful Christian ally" was an immense hope. Join hands with him, and Islam could be caught in a pincer from east and west.
When the Mongols struck the Islamic world from the east in the thirteenth century, Europeans even rejoiced for a moment: "At last Prester John has come." They mistook Genghis Khan's army for his. Soon it became clear the Mongols were no Christian kingdom but a force that threatened Europe itself, and the illusion broke; but in the meantime the pope and the king of France sent friars — Carpini (1245), Rubruck (1253) — to the East. To find Prester John, and to know the enemy. Those envoys, who set out to find a king who did not exist, brought back to Europe real knowledge of the East.
The kingdom that could not be found shifted, over time, in its supposed location from Asia to Africa — especially Ethiopia — because Ethiopia was in fact a country that had believed in Christianity since antiquity. So two motives were entangled in Portugal's great voyages: the economic motive of opening a spice route to India, and the religious motive of finding Prester John and allying against Islam. Vasco da Gama's voyage too carried the charge to find Prester John.
Here is an irony worth savoring. Prester John did not exist. Yet the longing to find him bore the great result of real route-opening and geographical discovery. An illusion became the engine of history. What moves human groups is not always the fact that exists — sometimes a shared belief and narrative make a real change. The Medici "prestige" of the last chapter, and the dynamics of the Reformation we will meet later, share this grain.
At the End of the Illusion, a Single Gun
Portugal's voyages, rounding Africa in search of Prester John and passing India and Southeast Asia, arrived at the end of their eastward push at an unexpected place. Japan.
In 1543 (1542 in some sources), a ship carrying Portuguese merchants bound for China was driven by a storm and washed ashore at Tanegashima, off the southern tip of Kyushu. Seeing their matchlock guns, the island's lord bought two at a great price and ordered Japanese artisans to copy them.⁶ Japan, already possessed of refined metalworking, domesticated the gun at astonishing speed.
That long voyage, set out in search of a priest-king who did not exist, that desire that sought spices, finally delivered guns to an island nation in the Far East. And what chain that single gun set off — how it unified Japan, and where that unified force was discharged — is the story of the next chapter.
Descending Michelangelo's staircase again, I thought of two things: flow and illusion. Technology that flowed from East to West (printing, gunpowder), and an illusion that headed from West to East (Prester John). The two motions met, and humanity began for the first time to weave a web that circled the globe. Like Michelangelo's staircase, history too does not flow in only one direction. Even as it flows down, it was climbing somewhere.

The World of Porcelain and Silver — From East to West
What the Medici Tried to Imitate
In a Florence museum I stopped before a few pieces of porcelain painted with small blue patterns. Medici porcelain. In the late sixteenth century, one of Europe's first attempts at soft-paste porcelain, made under Francesco I de' Medici in imitation of Chinese blue-and-white. About sixty pieces survive in the world today.¹
The interesting thing is that this attempt was, in effect, a failure. The Medici artisans could never reproduce the luminous white and the hardness of Chinese porcelain. The family that could do anything with money could neither buy nor make porcelain alone. Europe made true porcelain itself only much later, in the eighteenth century, at Meissen in Germany.
This small failure says much. In the sixteenth century, porcelain was no mere vessel. It was the essence of an advanced technology Europe craved but could not make — and, as the very word "china" came to mean porcelain in English, that object simply was China. It was an age when the technology of East Asia moved world trade.
And around this porcelain there is another great story that flowed from East to West. At its heart is the Imjin War (Japan's invasions of Korea, 1592–98). I met this war once already in Peru; there I traced how American silver reached the shores of Korea. This time I look at the other side — how East Asian technology flowed westward, and toward Europe. It is the other face of the same war.
The Pottery War
In Japan the Imjin War is sometimes called the yakimono sensō — the pottery war. The nickname captures one aspect sharply. Among the spoils Japan coveted most in this war were Korea's porcelain technology and its artisans.
At the time the East Asian porcelain hierarchy was clear. China at the summit (blue-and-white), Korea next (buncheong ware, white porcelain), Japan far behind, unable to produce porcelain itself. Just then, as the tea ceremony became a great fashion in Japan, the value of tea bowls soared sky-high. It was said a fine tea bowl was worth a castle.
So the Japanese army systematically abducted Korean potters in the course of the invasion. Not haphazard plunder but plunder aimed at technology and labor. Thousands of potters and artisans are said to have been forcibly relocated to Japan.
A representative figure is Yi Sam-pyeong. As tradition has it, he found good white clay at Arita in Kyushu and succeeded in firing Japan's first white porcelain — the beginning of the famed Arita ware and Imari ware. (That said, the story fixing Yi Sam-pyeong as "the founder of Arita porcelain" is a tradition settled from the eighteenth century onward and is not fully proven by contemporary sources — a point worth noting. Yet the larger trunk of the matter — that, occasioned by the Imjin War, Korean potters raised up Japanese porcelain — is clear.) The Sim Su-gwan family, too, raised Satsuma ware in Satsuma, and this family astonishingly continued as a distinguished house of pottery for fifteen generations over four hundred years, active in Japan even now. Descendants of abducted Korean potters became a great house of Japanese porcelain.
Here a world-historical reversal occurs. In the mid-seventeenth century, the turmoil of the Ming-Qing transition briefly halted the export of Chinese porcelain. Europe — the Dutch East India Company above all — could no longer obtain the Chinese porcelain it so craved. Precisely that vacuum was filled by the Japanese Arita porcelain that the Korean potters abducted in the Imjin War had raised. Japanese porcelain began to be exported to Europe in quantity, and European courts and nobles were wild for Imari ware.
Technology plundered from Korea, made to bloom in Japan, exported to Europe, became one axis of the world porcelain trade. A single Korean craft of shaping clay, through war and plunder and trade, rose even to the tables of European royalty. The vector of technology flowing from East to West appears, in porcelain, most vividly in this form of plundered technology transmitted.
The Technology Korea Discarded, Returned as a Sword
But the deepest chain linking the Imjin War to the East-to-West flow of technology is not porcelain but silver. And this chain — unlike the theory of printing transmission in earlier chapters — is a strong chain of causation, each link proven by documents.
In 1503, the ninth year of Yeonsan-gun's reign, two men who were not aristocrats but technicians of the middle and common classes, Kim Gam-bul and Kim Geom-dong, developed a new method of refining silver.² The so-called yeoneun bunnibeop (lead-silver separation), also called cupellation. It was a technology to separate out only silver from ore mixed with lead and silver. Heat a lead alloy over a bed of ash, and the lead oxidizes and is absorbed into the ash, leaving pure silver. It could produce silver of far higher purity, far faster, than the traditional method.
A revolutionary technology. But the Joseon court hesitated to adopt it on a large scale, and at certain times even suppressed it. The reasons were several. Diplomatic worry that increased silver production would swell Ming China's demands for silver tribute. A conservative judgment that easy silver production would shake the social and economic order. And the wariness of the aristocratic class toward the rise in status of the middle- and common-class men who had developed it. The Neo-Confucian worldview — that agriculture was the root and commerce and craft the branch — was at work.
So Joseon did not actively use this technology. And around 1533, two Joseon technicians crossed to Japan and taught the method to the technicians of the Iwami silver mine.³ Whether this was voluntary migration or abduction and sale is reconstructed differently by different sources, and the technicians' names differ from source to source. But the result is clear. After 1533, the output of Japan's Iwami mine exploded.
The Iwami mine at one time accounted for about a third of world silver production. It was the source of silver next after Potosí. Where did that silver go? Portuguese merchants bought Japan's silver and sold it in China, and in return brought back China's silk and porcelain and weapons. And some of it concentrated in the hands of domestic political power. Toyotomi Hideyoshi in particular built his fortune on this silver.
So the Iwami silver was used along two branches: the purchase of military technology (the matchlock) through the Portuguese, and the political funds to unify Japan militarily. And at the foundation of all this lay the lead-silver separation method that Joseon had discarded.
To thread this chain into one sentence: the technology Joseon failed to keep returned, sixty years later, as the funds for the sword that stabbed Joseon.
In 1503 Kim Gam-bul and Kim Geom-dong developed the method. Joseon did not use it, and suppressed it. In 1533 technicians went to Japan. The Iwami mine grew to world scale. Japan bought Portuguese guns with that silver. Hideyoshi rose. In 1592, the army of guns that silver had armed landed off the coast of Busan. The guns they carried came from Europe, and the money that bought them was silver made by the technology Joseon had discarded.
The Same Wave, a Different Shore
Here I summon the memory of Peru.
At Potosí in the Americas, indigenous laborers were dying of mercury poisoning as they mined silver. That silver flowed through Manila into China and propped up Ming China's silver-standard economy. Ming's demand for silver reorganized the economy of all East Asia, and that demand justified European capital's investment in Japanese silver production. While on one side of the earth an indigenous man mined silver and died, on the other a Joseon technician was being sold into Japan. And these two currents met on the coast of Joseon in 1592.
On the Peru journey I wrote this as "the same wave, a different shore." A wave that began in the Atlantic crossed the Pacific and placed the indigenous of Potosí, the enslaved of the Caribbean, the Christians of Japan, and the people of Joseon all within the same swell. No one was outside that wave.
In this book I look at the eastern shore of that wave — the waterway of technology that flowed from East to West, in porcelain and silver. The Imjin War was no mere war between Korea and Japan. It was an event in which European imperialism, the Catholic network, a global silver economy, and East Asia's internal politics crossed explosively on the coast of Joseon. And the starting point of that current was — as we saw in the last chapter — Columbus, 1492.
We usually remember the Imjin War as a history of passive victimhood: Japan suddenly invaded, we endured, we won or survived. This narrative is not inaccurate but incomplete, for it places Joseon outside world history. But Joseon was not an outsider to globalization. From the early sixteenth century Joseon was already part of the world silver system. Joseon's technology flowed to Japan, and Joseon's envoys, by way of Ming, touched indirectly on European goods and information. Joseon too was, in its small way, an agent of the first globalization.
What Clay and Silver Left Behind
The porcelain the Medici could never make; the silver Joseon could never keep. The two stories oddly make a pair. One is the longing of those who did not have; the other the tragedy of those who had and cast away. And between them runs the waterway of technology that flowed from East to West.
This story holds a deeply modern lesson. If a country does not treasure its own technology, another takes it. And that technology sometimes returns as a weapon that attacks it. One strand of the reason twentieth- and twenty-first-century Korea is so sensitive about technological protection and self-reliance may reach — somewhere in the collective unconscious — to this sixteenth-century experience.
But what I really wish to see in this chapter goes beyond the lesson of tragedy. It is connection. That the Medici's desire for porcelain, and Joseon's silver technology, and Japan's abduction of potters, and Europe's mania for porcelain, and the silver of the Americas — were all within one web. In the sixteenth century humanity began for the first time to work as a single connected system, and European history and East Asian history, which had flowed separately before, now came to touch each other's fate.
In the next chapter I trace this web into deeper time, into wider space — the web of the Eurasian steppe, far older than the sixteenth century of porcelain and silver, the knot tied by the gold of the Scythians and the envoys of Goguryeo.

The Knot of Eurasia — The Open Steppe and Goguryeo
The Old Masters of Tuscany
The name Tuscany (Toscana) comes from Etruria. Before Rome arose, the masters of this land were the Etruscans. Florence, the hills of Chianti, the very vineyard where I drank wine — all were once Etruscan land. They were renowned for fine goldwork; their granulation technique, fixing tiny grains of gold to a surface, was so delicate that it is hard to reproduce even now.
Interesting is the old dispute over the Etruscans' origin. The Greek Herodotus wrote that they came from the East, from Asia Minor. Others said they were indigenous. Recent genetic research leans, on the whole, toward indigenous origin, while also showing traces of a steppe lineage shared with neighboring groups. In the end they were not a people cleanly descended from one strand, but people formed at a place where several currents met.
Before these old masters of Tuscany I meet again a proposition this book has steadily approached. A strong civilization is not something pure but something mixed. And following this proposition, one sees another web reaching from the hills of Tuscany far to the Eurasian steppe, and to the Korean Peninsula.
The Open Steppe — The Illusion of Purity
Looking at Etruscan goldwork, I thought of another gold: the gold crowns of Silla.
Silla's gold crowns and gold ornaments, and the tomb style called the wooden-chamber tomb with stone mound, resemble in style the nomadic culture of the far Eurasian steppe. A vast cultural highway of gold and horsemanship and animal motifs, running from the north shore of the Black Sea through the Altai to the Korean Peninsula. At the eastern end of that road stood Silla.
The first to ride this road were the Scythians. And here one common misunderstanding must be corrected. In school we learn that "the Scythians were Iranian." That is not wrong, but to read it as "the Scythians were composed only of Iranians" is inaccurate.
Recent ancient-DNA research shows a wholly different picture. The Scythians were not a single people but a mixture of many groups from across the Eurasian steppe.¹ The west (around the Black Sea) is strong in European and Iranian elements; the further east one goes (Altai, Central Asia), the more distinctly East Asian genetic elements increase. The classification "Iranian" points only to the language lineage the ruling class used, not that the whole of the people belonging to that vast world were of Iranian blood. The Central Asian steppe of the time was a wide-open zone of mixing, where people and cultures of East and West came and went freely.
This fact matters because it divides how we read the connection between Silla and the steppe. That Silla's gold crown resembles Scythian style is fact. But it does not mean the ethnic identity "the Silla people were Scythians." Culture spreads across ethnic boundaries. Stylistic resemblance is evidence of flow, not of blood.
I mean to insist on this distinction. "We are descendants of the Scythians" is hard to prove and easy to refute. "The Korean Peninsula was the eastern terminus of the Eurasian steppe cultural web," by contrast, is supported by archaeology and genetics. When we attend not to blood but to flow, the story of the Korean Peninsula becomes, rather, larger and firmer.
Goguryeo, an Agent of Eurasia
The clearest knot of this web is Goguryeo. Goguryeo was not a provincial state of Manchuria but a great power recognized in the Eurasian diplomatic web.
In 607, one event testifies to this. As Emperor Yang of Sui toured the northern frontier, he unexpectedly met, in the tent of the Turkic Qimin Qaghan, an envoy of Goguryeo — an envoy sent by Goguryeo, joining hands with the Turks to check Sui.² This scene, recorded in the Book of Sui and the Samguk Sagi, shows that Goguryeo's diplomacy reached even to the Mongolian steppe.
Here too one enchanting exaggeration must be guarded against. Now and then the claim circulates that "the Turks were originally members of Goguryeo." But the sources say the opposite. To borrow the phrasing of the Korean history portal Urihistorynet, Goguryeo and the Turks were "parallel and independent" powers. The very fact that they formed an alliance proves they were separate independent states, for an alliance is made only between equal parties. So the precise expression is not "the Turks were part of Goguryeo" (untenable) but "Goguryeo was a northern power that made an alliance on equal terms with the Turks" (proven).
The most striking physical evidence of how far Goguryeo was recognized is in Samarkand. On the Afrasiab palace mural (seventh century) in Uzbekistan are painted two figures wearing feathered caps (jou-gwan) and bearing ring-pommel swords. By dress and weapon, the scholarly consensus takes them for Goguryeo envoys.³
Yet the mural's interpretation splits in two. One is the actual-dispatch theory — that Goguryeo really sent envoys as far as Samarkand and their appearance was painted (some even see them as secret envoys sent by Yeon Gaesomun). The other is the iconographic-borrowing theory. Professor Jeong Ho-seop of Hansung University and others hold that a Sogdian painter may merely have borrowed the conventional iconography of the "envoys of all nations under heaven," fashionable in China at the time, without a Sogdian having actually met a Goguryeo person.⁴
Interesting is that, whichever is right, one strand of the conclusion does not change. If they really came, it means Goguryeo's diplomacy reached Samarkand; even if only painted as iconography, it means Goguryeo was recognized as "a country customarily included among the envoys of the world." Both prove that Goguryeo was a recognized agent on the seventh-century Eurasian international stage. Before this mural I mean to speak only as far as is proven, and to leave what lies beyond as "suggests."
The Fusion Empire and Its Limit
This web of steppe and peninsula reached even to the mightiest empire of the Central Plain.
Sui and Tang — the empires that ended the division of 369 years and unified China — were not, as commonly thought, "empires of the Han people." Both the Yang who founded Sui and the Li who founded Tang came from the Guanlong group, deeply fused with northern nomadic (Xianbei) lineage. It was an aristocratic coalition combining Xianbei military power and Han administrative power. That is, Sui-Tang was neither a case of Han conquering nomads nor of nomads conquering China, but an already-mixed force uniting northern nomadism and southern agriculture into one empire. When Sui destroyed the Southern Dynasties and joined north and south in 589, it was not mere territorial unification but the fusion of two cultures.
Here again this chapter's proposition is confirmed. What is strongest is not purity but fusion. The strength of Sui-Tang came from that mixing and openness.
And yet that very mighty fusion empire was thwarted, again and again, before one small great power: Goguryeo.
Emperor Yang of Sui struck Goguryeo in 612 with an army of more than a million and was crushingly defeated at the Salsu; exhausting the nation's strength through repeated failed campaigns, Sui finally fell. Sui perished while attacking Goguryeo. Even Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin — who broke the Eastern Turks and seized the Western Regions, the mightiest conquering sovereign of his age — struck Goguryeo himself in 645, was blocked at Ansi Fortress, and turned back without taking it.⁵ He carried this defeat as a lifelong regret.
Of course the strength of causation must be distinguished. For Sui, the failure of the Goguryeo campaign was the direct cause of its fall. Tang failed in its campaign but did not perish from it, and a generation later, allied with Silla, finally brought Goguryeo down (668). But Tang too failed in the end to hold that land — Manchuria. Soon defeated by Silla and pushed off the peninsula (the Silla-Tang War), it saw Balhae rise on old Goguryeo land. It conquered but failed to govern.
A great power that even the world's strongest fusion empire could not lightly subdue. Goguryeo's resistance to Sui and Tang is a vast narrative of a northeast Asian power holding its own identity against the hegemony of the Central Plain empire. And that Goguryeo — allied with the Turks, its figure carved even on a mural in Samarkand — was a strong eastern knot of the Eurasian web is the picture this chapter means to draw.
Knots
Beginning with the Etruscans of Tuscany, passing the Scythians of the steppe, we have come to Goguryeo. Running through this long line is a single insight. There is no civilization descended purely from one strand. The stronger and more important a place, the more it was a knot where several currents met.
The Etruscans, the Scythians, Silla, Sui-Tang — all were products of mixing. And what made that mixing possible was the vast connective web of Eurasia. Horsemanship and goldwork and animal style, people and technology and thought, flowed endlessly East and West along this web. The Korean Peninsula was not the margin of that web but a knot and an agent at its eastern end.
This is the picture this journey has steadily seen. In the financial web of the Medici, in the sixteenth century of porcelain and silver, and in this Eurasian millennium — the same pattern repeats. Everything was connected.
But here I must stop and cast a darker question. By what logic did this connective web work? Along the road that gold and technology and thought flowed, what flowed at the same time? In the next chapter I look at the shadow of this web — the logic of taking and extracting.

The Web of Plunder
Two Things That Flowed the Same Road
It was a Chianti night. Darkness settled on the hills, and with a glass of wine before me I was going back over what I had seen that day. The Medici system, the hinge of 1492, the porcelain and silver that flowed from East to West, the knot of Eurasia. The picture that everything was connected was growing ever clearer.
But the clearer the picture grew, the more one thing weighed on me. This beautiful web I had traced had long worked by a single logic. The logic of taking and extracting. Along the road that gold and technology and thought flowed, plunder flowed at the same time.
Traveling in Peru, I learned an old name attached to this logic of plunder — a word of the indigenous of the Americas. But in this book I will not put that name in front. The name does not matter. What matters is how the logic works, and how wide its shadow. This chapter is about that shadow.
The Limit-Line of Empires
First I want to gather one pattern I met again and again on this journey: the rise and fall of empires around the East Asian frontier zone — the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria.
As we saw in the last chapter, Sui perished attacking Goguryeo. That was not the end. The same pattern repeats across a thousand years.
Ming sent a great army to Joseon during the Imjin War. That seven-year war decisively drained Ming's finances and military strength, and in the weakened gap the Jurchens of Manchuria (Later Jin, then Qing) rose and finally toppled Ming in 1644. Qing lost catastrophically to Japan in the Sino-Japanese War of 1894, fighting over control of Joseon, and that defeat decisively hastened its collapse, ending seventeen years later in the Xinhai Revolution. And Japan established Manchukuo in 1932, but the endless overreach of its continental ambition tripped its own feet, and it fell in 1945.
Sui, Ming, Qing, Japan. Empires that laid unreasonable hands on the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria collapsed or reached their limit one after another. It is hard to see this as a mere string of coincidences. But the strength of causation must be honestly distinguished. For Sui it was the direct cause of ruin. For Ming, Qing, and Japan, intervention in the Peninsula was a decisive accelerant within a complex collapse, or a testing ground that exposed a limit. To absolutize it into a law — "intervene in the Peninsula and the empire falls" — is exaggeration. Into each empire's fall many factors worked together: internal corruption, fiscal crisis, other foreign powers.
Still, the pattern is real. Why? Because the Korean Peninsula and Manchuria were a frontier zone where several spheres of power met. Central-Plain agriculture, northern nomadism, the peninsula, and in modern times Russia and Japan as well. A frontier zone is hard for any one power to monopolize completely, always exposed to the resistance and intervention of others. So an empire that tried unreasonably to monopolize this place fell, despite enormous cost, into the trap of overreach, failing at complete control. The attempt to monopolize the frontier toppled the one who attempted it.
The compressed version of this pattern is the Manchurian city of Harbin. In the late nineteenth century Russia laid the Chinese Eastern Railway across Manchuria and built what was in effect a Russian international city. The Jewish diaspora fleeing the tsar's persecution settled there; Japan coveted it; and in 1909 An Jung-geun cut history there by executing Itō Hirobumi. In one city, Russia, China, Japan, Jews, and Korea overlapped. Manchuria, from ancient Goguryeo and Balhae to the modern powers, was a vast crucible where every kind of force crossed and collided.
Beyond East Asia
But this pattern of plunder was not confined to East Asia. In the same age, the same logic was sweeping the whole earth. We often explain Europe's rise by Europe's inner genius — the Renaissance, the scientific revolution, rationality. But reckon honestly, and much of the fuel that upheld Europe's growth came from outside Europe. The worlds that had once been richer and stronger were, in the several centuries Europe rose, pushed one after another into ruin or to the margins.
In the next chapter I widen my gaze to that global web — the great split historians call the Great Divergence. When Europe rose, what happened to the rest of the world? And how did that plunder justify itself, and why could the plundered fail to stop it? The diagnosis is not yet over.
The Great Divergence — When Europe Rose, and the Rest of the World
The World Hung on a Wall
Deep within the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence is the Hall of Geographical Maps (Sala delle Carte Geografiche), which Cosimo I de' Medici had made in the sixteenth century. On the wooden panels filling the walls, the whole of the world then known is painted, one map at a time. Europe and Asia, Africa and the newly discovered Americas. The sovereign of one small inland duchy spread the whole earth on the wall of his study and sat in its very center.
In that room a strange feeling seized me. These maps were no mere decoration. They were the map of an age's desire — the desire to see the world at a glance, to divide it into coordinates, to hold it in the hand. Beyond the door opened in 1492, Europe was now beginning to handle the whole world like the wall of its own study.
But outside the world hung on that wall, something wholly different was happening. In the several centuries Europe rose, civilizations that had once been richer and stronger than Europe collapsed one after another or were pushed to the margins. Historians call this great split the Great Divergence. And honestly seen, Europe's rise and the rest of the world's descent were not two separate events but two faces of the same coin.
Only, let me set a boundary from the start. To absolutize into a single cause that "Europe plundered everything and grew rich" is to make another inaccurate myth. Into the Great Divergence, besides plunder, several factors were folded, and that story I will treat separately in the next two chapters. What I mean to see in this chapter is one face of the picture — the structure of extraction by which Europe's rise was achieved by drawing away the wealth of the rest of the world.
India — Plunder Done by the Ledger
The clearest case is India. And the terror of India's case is that its plunder was done not by the sword but by the ledger.
Until the eighteenth century, India was one of the richest regions in the world. The cotton textiles of Bengal above all — the famous muslin of Dhaka was so fine it was called "woven air," a luxury European nobles craved. After the British East India Company seized Bengal at the Battle of Plassey (1757), this wealth began to flow in one direction.
The method is the point. Britain collected taxes in India, and with those taxes bought Indian goods. And then it called that "British exports." With Indians' money it bought Indian goods and took the profit to Britain. To this it added the "Home Charges" — even the administrative and military costs of ruling India were made India's burden. A structure in which the plundered paid even the costs of the plunderer.
At the same time Britain deliberately destroyed India's cotton industry. High tariffs on Indian cottons, and British factory-woven cloth poured into India. The weavers of Dhaka, who had made "woven air," lost their work. As one colonial administrator wrote, "the bones of the weavers whitened the plains of India." A country that had been the world's center of cotton fell to a supplier of raw material and a market for finished goods for British factories. And in India, once a rich agricultural country, great famines recurred through the period of colonial rule, and millions starved.
India's economic historians call this structure the "Drain of Wealth," a concept first named by Dadabhai Naoroji in the nineteenth century. Recently the economist Utsa Patnaik estimated the wealth Britain drew from India between 1765 and 1938 at about 45 trillion dollars.¹ But this figure is an estimate, and contested. It varies greatly by the interest rate and conversion method used, and critics hold that the method overstates the "opportunity cost" of the plundered wealth. So I do not lean on the figure "45 trillion dollars" itself. Whatever the exact sum, the structure — that wealth flowed systematically in one direction — is clear.
In India's case I see one essence of plunder. Plunder does not always wear the face of naked violence. It often wears the guise of lawful administration and trade and finance. The ledgers add up exactly, the taxes are collected by law, the trade proceeds by contract. Behind that face pretending to be "the normal working of institutions," wealth is quietly drawn in one direction. Plunder by the sword invites resistance; plunder done by the ledger long fails even to look like plunder.
China — Rich, and So a Target
The same logic worked, on a larger scale, on China.
Until the eighteenth century Qing was the largest economy in the world. Europe craved China's tea and silk and porcelain but had little to sell China in return. So Europe's silver — the river of silver we saw earlier — flowed endlessly into China. As the trade deficit piled up, Britain sought a way to fill it, and arrived at the ugliest solution: to push opium grown in India into China.
When China banned and cracked down on opium, Britain, on the pretext of that crackdown, started a war (the Opium War, 1840). A war to protect the right to sell narcotics. The mighty Qing empire we saw in earlier chapters collapsed in this war, ceding Hong Kong, opening ports, falling to semi-colony. The age the Chinese call the "Century of Humiliation" began here.
Here is a deep irony. China became a target not because it was poor but because it was rich. Because there was much to take. The web of plunder faces where wealth is gathered. Abundance, unprotected, becomes rather a danger — this too is a larger version of the story we saw in Chapter 4, of Joseon unable to keep its silver technology.
Africa — Plunder Wrapped in the Language of Benevolence
If what left India and China was wealth, what left Africa was people.
More than twelve million Africans were forcibly taken in the Atlantic slave trade. The youngest and healthiest population of a continent was drawn off over centuries. The wound this human loss left on Africa's social structure and political order is hard to gauge even now.
And in the late nineteenth century, the European powers divided Africa itself among themselves. The Berlin Conference of 1884 is its symbol. Europe's diplomats gathered in one place and partitioned the African continent — and at that table there was not a single African. They laid rulers on the map and drew straight lines to fix borders. That African borders today have so many straight lines is the trace of this. Not the boundaries of rivers and mountains and peoples, but lines drawn by the European's ruler. The fate of a continent was decided in the meeting room of people who did not live there.
The darkest place of that partition was the Congo. King Leopold II of Belgium made the Congo in effect his private estate, and to draw out rubber, drove the inhabitants into forced labor. The atrocity of cutting off the hands of those who failed to meet quotas was committed, and millions are estimated to have died. Yet the banner over all this was — "civilization." In the language of benevolence, of leading barbarism to civilization, the plunder of a continent was wrapped. The most terrible form of plunder is plunder that believes itself a good deed. This language of benevolence I will dissect separately in the next chapter.
Islam — A Middleman's Road Closed, a Debt Forgotten
Last, there is one more world that was once ahead of Europe: Islamic civilization.
As we saw in Chapter 2, after 1492 the opening of the Atlantic route disabled the old trade roads that passed through the Mediterranean and the Middle East. When the spices of the East no longer passed through the Islamic world, the middleman-trade economy of this region, the Ottoman Empire among them, slowly withered. A world that had once held the crossroads of East-West trade and prospered became, as the road shifted, a margin. In the nineteenth century Europe called the declining Ottoman "the sick man of Europe."
Here lies one of history's greatest ironies. In Chapter 3 I told of technology flowing from East to West. But it was not only technology that flowed. Much of the Greek and Roman knowledge Europe prides itself on having "recovered" in the Renaissance was in fact preserved and developed by the Islamic world and returned. The Aristotle and Greek medicine and mathematics that Europe forgot in the darkness of the Middle Ages, Arab scholars had translated, annotated, developed. The very word algebra comes from Arabic. That knowledge later flowed back to Europe, retranslated into Latin in places like Toledo in Spain — this story of Toledo we will meet again later. One strand of the intellectual nourishment of Europe's revival was owed to the very world Europe would later call "the sick man." That the one who owed the debt came to look down on the one who lent it — this is another truth the Great Divergence has hidden.
In the twentieth century this region was caught again in the web of plunder. This time it was oil. The Sykes-Picot Agreement (1916), by which Britain and France secretly agreed to divide the Middle East during the First World War, left, like Africa's Berlin Conference, borders again drawn with a ruler. The conflict born of those artificial boundaries continues even now.
A River That Flowed in One Direction
Leaving the Hall of Maps, I thought again of the world hung on that wall. The maps Cosimo spread in his study were a picture of how Europe began to handle the world — to see, to divide, to make into coordinates, to draw in.
India's wealth, China's silver, Africa's people, Islam's knowledge and oil. All of it flowed, in one age, in one direction. And much of that flow was done not by the sword but by the ledger, not by violence but under the face of "normal institutions." The logic of plunder is not naked plunder alone. It is the very system that, wearing the guise of legality and benevolence, draws wealth in one direction.
In the Peru journey I saw the other end of this flow. The silver of the Americas and the enslaved of the Caribbean — the western knot of the same web. What I have seen here is the Eurasian knot of that web. Two continents, one web. So I write it thus. It was not Europe that made the world, but the world that made Europe.
But to stop here is a half-truth. Two questions remain. How did they justify that plunder to themselves? And — the more painful question — why could the plundered fail to stop it? The next two chapters face those two questions in turn.

The Justification of Plunder — Dissecting "Who Are They to…"
Before a Placard
Florence holds one of the world's oldest museums of anthropology. Before one display case I stood a long while — the traces, collected in the nineteenth century, of an attempt to "classify" human beings. Instruments for measuring the size of skulls, charts dividing races into grades. This was once called "science."
Before that case I was, honestly, angry. Who on earth were they, to partition a continent with a ruler, to grade a civilization, to call other people "savage" and take from them? That anger followed me all through the writing of the last chapter. But I do not mean to leave the anger as it is. When anger stops at "they were devils," it misses the very identity of what made that plunder possible. This chapter lays that anger on the dissecting table. How did they justify their plunder to themselves?
Plunder Wrapped as Benevolence
The commonest justification was the "civilizing mission" (mission civilisatrice). That we bore the noble burden of leading the uncivilized to civilization. The English poet Kipling sang it outright as "the White Man's Burden." That colonial rule was not exploitation but service, not plunder but a gift.
The terror of this logic reaches its height in the Congo we saw in the last chapter. The rubber-extraction that drove millions to death was carried out in the name of "civilization." When the plunderer believes himself a benefactor, there is not even guilt in the plunder. He expects gratitude even as he takes. The language of benevolence was the most refined anesthetic of plunder.
Prejudice Dressed in the Clothes of Science
A deeper justification came dressed in the clothes of "science." Nineteenth-century Europe made a theory dividing races into biological grades — so-called scientific racism. It measured skulls, classified faces, and by this graded the superiority of human beings. And what lent this pseudo-science its most powerful authority was, unexpectedly, the theory of evolution.
Here I must summon a society. In eighteenth-century Birmingham, England, there was a gathering called the Lunar Society, named because it met on the nights of the full moon. James Watt of the steam engine, his partner Matthew Boulton, Josiah Wedgwood of pottery, the chemist Joseph Priestley who discovered oxygen, and Erasmus Darwin — the grandfather of Charles Darwin — gathered and shared knowledge freely across fields. A brilliant society of emergence, where science and industry and thought mixed at one table. That open web, sharing knowledge across fields, is also one face of what this book calls mutual flourishing.
And yet that light cast, a generation later, a dark shadow. When Erasmus's grandson Charles Darwin published evolution by natural selection in 1859, it was a great insight into life. But men like Herbert Spencer took that theory into human society and turned "survival of the fittest" into a law of society. That the strong rule the weak is nature's providence, and therefore Europe's rule over other civilizations is natural too. This is Social Darwinism.
Here one must be precise. Social Darwinism is not Darwin's theory but its distortion. Darwin himself did not claim colonial rule as a law of nature. Even the phrase "survival of the fittest" was made not by Darwin but by Spencer. A science that meant to explain nature was, in the hands of those who would justify plunder, turned into a weapon. That the evolutionary thought of the Lunar Society, which shared the light of knowledge, was used a generation later as the alibi of plunder — that the same thought can be both light and shadow — is the lesson this chapter means to keep.
When Might Is Disguised as Right
The civilizing mission, scientific racism, Social Darwinism — all, in the end, were doing one thing: disguising might as right. They had the might to take. But might alone was not enough. To sustain plunder long, they needed a story that it was just. So they believed they had a "right" — a right to spread civilization, a right to rule as the superior, a right to follow the law of nature.
But that right was an illusion. It was clothing that might put on itself — a plausible garment woven of race and religion and pseudo-science. Strip it off, and there is not right but might, and only the narrative that would justify that might.
The True Target of Anger
Come this far, and it becomes clear where to aim the first anger.
When anger stops at "the white man is a devil," "Europe is the civilization of evil," it is satisfying but powerless. Worse, it hides the true identity of plunder. For plunder is not the peculiar evil of a particular race or people.
In the same age, Japan did exactly the same. Invading Korea and Asia, Japan hung out the language of benevolence — the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," building an Asia that flourishes together. It was the same grammar as the West's "civilizing mission," different only in the letters. As I said in Chapter 6, plunder does not choose a nation. Wherever the conditions are met, whatever the race, whatever the civilization, it makes the same logic. When the might to take arises, a narrative to justify that might follows. That is the logic of plunder — not the nature of a particular people but a system that blooms anywhere, once the might is in place.
Therefore the true target of anger must be not "the bad race" but "the plundering system." This distinction does not absolve the perpetrator. Rather it asks a deeper responsibility. If the problem were the nature of a particular people, one need only blame that people; but if the problem is the system, then unless that system is changed, whoever stands in that place, the same thing repeats. It means, too, that yesterday's victim, gaining might, can become tomorrow's perpetrator. A harder and more fundamental responsibility.
Leaving the museum, I felt that anger had turned into something a little different. Not hatred toward a race but a clear gaze upon a system. Hatred is bound to the past; a gaze can face the future. And that gaze carried me to the next question. Then — why could the plundered fail to stop it?
Why Could They Not Stop It — The Inner Side of the Great Divergence
At a Harbor the Medici Made
Go west from Florence and you come to Livorno, a port city the Medici made. Inland Florence had no sea. So the Medici, watching the age of the Atlantic open, tried, however late, to cut a door to the sea. They declared Livorno a free trade port and took in merchants without asking religion or origin. Jews, Muslims, those fleeing persecution — all could trade here. A small but clever attempt — to read the changing current and ride it.
Standing at that harbor, I set down for a moment the anger of the last chapters and faced a more uncomfortable question. That Europe plundered is fact. But if I explain everything by "Europe plundered," I come to draw Asia as a pure victim only. And I miss the question that truly matters. Why could they not stop it? Why did civilizations once richer and stronger fail to read the current and only suffer? Avoid this question, and there is nothing to learn from the history of victimhood.
Division Bred Competition; Unity Bred Rigidity
The first clue is paradoxical. Europe's strength lay in its division.
Fifteenth-century Europe was split into countless small states in endless competition. This division, which usually looks like weakness, became an unexpected strength. The story of Columbus is the proof. He took his plan to sail west to the king of Portugal and was refused. But that was not the end. He went to neighboring Spain, and there won patronage. That when one sovereign refused, the neighboring one might take it up — that competitive plurality made room for a venturesome attempt to survive.
The great empires of the same age, by contrast, were unified, and so rigid. Ming, and India's Mughal Empire — one center decided everything. If that center judged "no need to go to sea," that was the end. The refused adventurer had no "neighboring country" to go to. Unity gave stability and order, but at the same time blocked the gap through which a new attempt might slip.
They Could Have, and Did Not
The most dramatic showing of this contrast is Zheng He's fleet.
Nearly ninety years before Columbus, from 1405, Ming's Zheng He led a vast fleet across the Indian Ocean seven times. Those ships were incomparably larger than Columbus's Santa María, and the fleet's scale overwhelming. It reached even East Africa. Technology, resources, seafaring ability — China had it all. Far earlier than Europe, far larger, it could have gone out onto the ocean.
And yet in 1433 Ming withdrew that fleet. And forbade going out to sea itself (the sea ban). It did not lose the ability to sail; holding the ability to sail, it chose not to. The reasons were several. The enormous cost; a judgment that guarding against the northern nomads was more urgent; and above all, a self-sufficient worldview that the Middle Kingdom was the center of the world with nothing to seek outside. Being at the center of all under heaven, why go out to the margins?
Here is the most painful truth of the Great Divergence. China did not fail to do it because it could not; it could have, and did not. Europe, by contrast, went out because it was desperate. With the Ottomans blocking the overland road to the East, to obtain spices there was no way but to go around by sea. Scarcity became a drive, and abundance became stagnation. The side with much, lacking nothing to want, stopped; the side wanting much, in desperation, set out.
The Place of Chance and the Undecided
That said, this cannot be made into a new myth of "the East was lazy and the West diligent." Honestly seen, the Great Divergence holds a large place of chance and of the undecided, reducible to no one's will.
The historian of science Joseph Needham spent his life on one question. China was long a technological civilization ahead of Europe — why did the modern scientific revolution arise in Europe and not China? The so-called Needham Question. He left vast research, but this question is still not fully solved. That there is no single answer may itself be an answer.
The economic historian Kenneth Pomeranz offers another angle. The very title of his book is The Great Divergence. He holds that until the eighteenth century there was not as great a gap as we think between the advanced regions of China and the advanced regions of Europe. Then what divided them? Pomeranz stresses two chances. One, that England happened to have coal buried in an easily mined place. The other, the great windfall of the Americas — colonies that handed England raw material and food and a market all at once. That Europe's leap was not the result of pure genius but owed greatly to geographic chance and the external fuel of colonies.
The Most Honest Synthesis
So I mean to sum up the Great Divergence thus. It was a complex phenomenon of many layers, explicable by no single cause.
There was Europe's plunder. But added to it were Europe's inner competitive plurality, Asia's inner self-sufficiency and rigidity, and chances like coal and the Americas. All of these worked together. The most honest single sentence is this. Europe's rise depended greatly on extraction, yet extraction was not its sole cause. Only, without that extraction, its scale and speed would have been impossible.
And this synthesis returns to myself. We met this lesson once already in Chapter 4. Japan, seeing the matchlock from the washed-ashore Portuguese merchants, took it in at once and domesticated it. Joseon suppressed the lead-silver separation method it held in its own hands. The one who first took in the current gained might; the one who turned from the current paid the price sixty years later. The Great Divergence is a larger version of the same story. Asia was not only plundered. Asia too, before the changing current, settled into self-sufficiency and missed that current.
This is not to blame ourselves. To turn the responsibility for suffering back upon the victim is another plunder. But read suffering honestly within the structure of world history, and one's stance toward the future changes. What is needed is not resentment toward someone but the ability to read the current and redesign one's own model. That ability was the true dividing point between the side that fell and the side that survived in the age of plunder.
Evening fell on the harbor of Livorno. Looking at that harbor the Medici made to ride, however small, the current, I could not help carrying this diagnosis into the present. Does one read the current and redesign one's model — this is no story of the sixteenth century alone. It is the question dividing, right now, the strong and the weak of our own age. The next chapter goes to that present.
The Medici Pattern Repeats — Germany, Spain, and AI
Panels on the Hillside
On the way back to Chianti, I saw something glinting in the sun on the roof of a farmhouse. Solar panels. On the red tiles of a stone house centuries old, blue panes turning sunlight into electricity. Over the old ridge of Tuscany, the white blades of a wind turbine were slowly turning in the distance too.
Before that scene I saw again, in a landscape of the present, one principle this journey has steadily traced. The rise and fall of dominance turns not on whether its bearer is superior or inferior, but on whether, when the center of gravity shifts, it read the current of the age and redesigned its own model. And that yesterday's formula for success becomes tomorrow's shackle. That the one who most perfectly embodied an age is most fragile when the premises change.
This chapter treats a reality still in progress. So I write it not as assertion but as observed tendency, by pattern rather than number. As no one in 1492 could be sure of the age of the Atlantic, we too do not know the end of this transition. But one can trace the figure of how the sixteenth-century pattern repeats in the twenty-first.
Germany — The Medici of Today
Looking at Germany today, I keep thinking of the Medici.
Germany became postwar Europe's strongest industrial nation. Its success rested on a few firm premises. Cheap energy — cheap Russian natural gas above all. World-class internal-combustion automobile technology. And a vast export market to buy those refined manufactures — a fast-growing China most of all. On these three premises Germany's industrial model long prospered.
Yet recently those premises have shaken almost all at once. As relations with Russia broke, the foundation of cheap gas collapsed. As the automobile's center of gravity shifted from the combustion engine to the electric car, the internal-combustion advantage Germany built over a century suddenly became a burden. And China, once its largest customer, turned into its strongest competitor — in electric cars and much else. The customer became the competitor.
This is the paradox of the Medici. The very strengths that lifted Germany to the summit — heavy-and-chemical industry optimized for cheap energy, technology concentrated in the combustion engine, an export-dependent structure — became, when the current changed, the heaviest shackles. Having perfectly fitted itself to one age, it found it hardest to remake itself into the next. As Florence did after 1492, a system most precisely tuned to one age shakes with it when the ground is pulled away.
Spain — Energy One Need Not Take by Force
An interesting contrast lies one country over: Spain.
Spain was long regarded as the periphery of Europe's economy. Yet that very "lagging" carried a different meaning in a time of transition. Because the weight of old industry to defend was light, it could ride the new current more lightly. Spain is a land rich in sun and wind. On that natural condition, a tendency of rapid shift toward renewable energy is observed.
Here there is a resonance that touches this whole book. Fossil fuel is by nature extractive. It must be dug from somewhere underground, and that somewhere is often someone else's land, and so the history of fossil fuel has also been a history of plunder and conflict — as the oil of Chapter 7 was. But sunlight and wind need not be taken. There is no one's land to dig them from, no war to wage over them. A transition to energy one need not take by force may be not merely a matter of technology but a step out of the grammar of plunder — a small material preview of the very question this book asks later, whether the web of plunder can be rewoven into a web of mutual flourishing.
Only, all this is in progress, and unfinished. Whether Spain's transition will finally lead to a leap, whether Germany will finally redesign its model, no one yet knows. What I can say is not the result but the pattern. Faced with the same external shock — an energy crisis, or China's rise — one country suffers it as catastrophe and another turns it into opportunity. The shock does not decide fate. Whether one can redesign one's own model before that shock is what divides.
Again, Before a New Current
And now, all nations face together the greatest new current: artificial intelligence.
AI may be a hinge of an age, like the Atlantic of 1492 — a current that can shift the whole center of gravity. But we are in the middle of that voyage, and as Columbus never knew where he had landed, we too do not yet know where this transition heads. So I will not foretell who will win at AI. That is not a question this journey can answer.
Only, one thing this journey has steadily taught is clear. That riding the current first (ability) and to what one puts that force (direction) are separate. The Medici rode the current of finance first. Europe rode the current of the great voyages first. But a system that put that force to plunder found, in the end, the plunder returning upon it, festering or collapsing. To win at a current, and to design that current toward mutual flourishing, are different matters.
So the true question before AI is not "will we win at AI." That is still a question within the grammar of plunder. The true question is this. In which direction will we design AI? Will we weave it as a web that takes, or as a web that joins?
Honestly, that contest is not yet decided. As no one in 1492 was sure of the age of the Atlantic, we do not know the end of this transition. But one thing we know. That its direction is not fixed in advance. It is not nature but design, and the design is in our hands.
The solar panels on the hillside glinted in the last of the sunlight. New technology laid on an old stone house. That scene — past and future folded onto one roof — felt, oddly, like the very middle of this journey. We always meet a new current upon an old foundation. The question is by what hand we grasp that current. In the coming chapters I set out in search of the hand that joins without taking.
From Separation to Connection — And Designing Anew
Not Just a Tourist
Someone in San Casciano told us of a village restaurant — the Cantinetta del Nonno, "Grandfather's little wine cellar," a trattoria for local Italians rather than tourists. And he added: if we liked, he would call ahead for us. So that the restaurant would know "we were not just tourists."
That one phrase stayed with me long. Not just a tourist. What is a tourist? From the restaurant's side, a tourist is a transaction that comes once and goes — a relation in which we are instruments to each other: pay money, receive food, leave. But the moment someone's introduction lays on it the phrase "people I know," the relation becomes not a transaction but hospitality. The same table, the same food, yet the whole way of treating a person changes.
This small difference compresses exactly the difference between the two logics I have traced all this journey. One reduces the other being to instrument, to transaction, to object of extraction — the logic of plunder we saw in the last chapters. The other receives the other being as itself, and joins. The web that takes, and the web that joins. This chapter is about that second web.
What Hides Inside the Word "Capital"
Before reaching that joining web, I must first harvest a seed I planted in Chapter 1.
We often call relationships "social capital." Connections, ties, networks. But look closely at this word and something strange appears. Capital is by nature an asset operated to yield return — an object to invest, accumulate, withdraw, to reckon profit and loss on. So the moment we call a relationship "capital," that relationship automatically becomes one item in the portfolio I hold and operate. Friendship, family, community all become "my assets."
In the sentence "that person is my connection," the person is a resource mobilizable for my purpose. The value of the relationship is measured by the utility it gives me. Here "I" remain at the center, and the other is a resource at the periphery.
What is subtle but terrible about this is that even the well-meaning language that would save relationships is already speaking in the grammar of extraction. The concept of social capital meant to defend the importance of relationship, but the very language of that defense was within the grammar of plunder.
Tellingly, this connects straight to the Medici of Chapter 1. The Medici were geniuses at handling money as a meta-resource, translating the world into the language of capital. At the end of five hundred years in which that civilization of capital organized the world by the logic of extraction, we have come to the point of calling even relationships "social capital." The grammar of conversion the Medici opened has been applied at last to the human heart and its relationships.
When Freedom Is Caged in the Market
On this grammar of extraction is written the name of an age: neoliberalism. To see it precisely, one must first distinguish it from liberalism.
Classical liberalism — as with John Stuart Mill — saw freedom broadly, as the condition by which a human being realizes himself. It defended individual freedom, but held that freedom went together with responsibility to others and to community. Freedom and solidarity were not contradictory.
Neoliberalism narrows that freedom to one place: to exchange in the market. The human is reduced to homo economicus — a being endlessly reckoning profit and loss to maximize self-interest — and every domain of life is reorganized by the logic of the market. Education, medicine, care, even relationships are translated into the language of transaction and competition and efficiency. The market becomes not one domain of life but the grammar of all of life.
Neoliberalism is often mistaken for a philosophy of "small government." But look precisely, and it is the opposite. To drive the market's logic into every corner of society, it needs, rather, a strongly intervening state. That the first national-scale experiment of neoliberalism was in Chile under military dictatorship tells us so. In the name of freedom, a state that suppressed freedom forced the market open.
Here it shows why neoliberalism is the theoretical identity of the logic of plunder. To reduce all relationships to market exchange is to see every other as a resource, everything as extractable value. The word "social capital" we saw was the very condensation of that grammar. To see even relationship as an asset to operate and withdraw — that is the habit of extraction neoliberalism planted in our hearts. Korea's suicides and its ultra-low birth rate too can be read as symptoms of that habit engraved on the body of a society. In a society where all are all others' competitors, relationship becomes a cost and the future a risk.
Only, here one must be honest. Neoliberalism is not evil in essence. The market is one of the most powerful coordinating devices humanity has made, and it is true that the globalization of recent decades lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. There was point in its critique of the inefficiency of a bloated state. The problem is not the market itself but the totalization of the market. When what should be one tool of life colonizes the whole of life, the market becomes a machine of extraction.
So the true question is not "freedom or control." It is "how to join freedom with mutual flourishing." Freedom has two branches. One is the extractive freedom of isolated individuals competing, using each other as resources. The other is the freedom of realizing oneself together, dwelling within one another. When Martin Buber said that only in the relation of "I–Thou," not "I–It," does a person become a person; when Alfred Adler said that a human being is healthy only within a sense of community — what they pointed to was the latter. True freedom is not the freedom of breaking away from others but the freedom of being rightly joined to others.
The Root of Separation, the Alternative of Connection
This logic of extraction is rooted in a deeper place: the way of thinking called separation.
The thinking that cleanly cleaves the world into subject and object, mind and matter, I and you. What is separated becomes an object, and what has become an object can be measured, owned, extracted. The system of plunder was built upon this thinking of separation. For to take something, one must first make it an object separate from oneself.
So to go beyond plunder is not merely a matter of behaving more kindly. It is to change the very gaze that sees the world as a collection of separate objects. If separation is the root of plunder, its alternative is connection. Instead of cleaving you and me and making instruments, to let us dwell within one another. A state in which each is open to the other — without erasing each one's own particularity, and, unlike the forced collectivism that dissolves the individual into the whole. An old theology called this perichōrēsis, "dwelling within one another." But in this book I mean to use, instead of a grand word, a plain one. Just connection, or joining.
That this connection is no mere sentiment, the field of my own expertise — health — testifies. Social isolation is a risk factor equal to fifteen cigarettes a day and surpassing obesity, predicting early death. Loneliness is bound up with chronic inflammation, and the suppression of emotion breaks down immunity and sleep. The human has never once been alone. Body and mind and society are not separate but ceaselessly regulate one another. So health is not a property owned by an individual but a state arising from how open one's connection is. When relationship is blocked, a person sickens — this is not metaphor but physiology.
Between Diagnosis and Cure — Beyond One Philosopher
The one who most sharply diagnosed how this extraction works within our hearts is the philosopher Byung-Chul Han. His insight strongly supports this book's diagnosis. But — honestly — I think I must go a step beyond where he stopped.
Han calls our age the "achievement society." Where the old disciplinary society controlled people by the prohibition "you may not," today's achievement society drives them by the command "you can." The terror is that the hand holding the whip is one's own. In the place where the external exploiter has vanished, we exploit ourselves in the name of freedom. The exploiting master and the exploited slave live together within one person. At the end lie burnout and depression. What he calls, in another book, "the expulsion of the other" — that as everything is made an object of one's own achievement and consumption, the true other disappears — is the exact opposite of the connection this book speaks of. A world where the other in whom one might dwell has vanished. Han drew, more vividly than anyone, the wound the logic of plunder has cut into our inner life.
But his prescription, as I see it, stops halfway. What he counsels is, on the whole, withdrawal. Deep boredom, contemplation, standing still. To turn from hyperactivity back into oneself. That word is right, and needed. But an individual withdrawing alone into contemplation does not change the system that exhausts people. And more importantly — in that place of withdrawal, how one is to be joined again to the other is left empty. Han diagnoses the disease precisely but does not reach the cure that rejoins relationship.
I would name this difference thus. If Han is the diagnostician, what this book seeks is the healer. Diagnosis says "withdraw, stop." The cure goes a step further and says "dwell within one another" — not withdrawal but the active rebuilding of relationship. And that rebuilding must be not sentiment but something that works. To underpin, with the science of the body — the pathology of isolation, oxytocin, the physiology of relationship — that health arises from relationship, and to translate it into a system that can be measured and institutionalized. To go beyond diagnosis into design — that is the point at which one respects Han and yet goes beyond him.
Tellingly, both Han and I underpin a Western concept with Eastern wisdom. He lights the achievement society with the wu-wei of Zen and Daoism. I light connection with the Dao, with Wonhyo's hwajaeng (harmonizing disputes), with the mutual interpenetration of qi. Seeing the same darkness, one finds his answer in stopping, the other in joining. And joining, as the next section shows, must be designed.
Designing Anew, Like the Medici
So what is the prescription? Here I think again of the Medici.
In 1397, Giovanni di Bicci began with a single small bank. What he designed was not a beautiful idea but a working mechanism. The bill of exchange as a tool, double-entry bookkeeping as measurement, the branch network as institution, the exchange margin as incentive. A vision works only when it meets measurement and institution and incentive. The Medici bill of exchange changed the world not because it was a good idea but because it was a working system.
The vision of connection must be the same. Not to stay a warm ideal, it too must be designed as a measured and institutionalized system. As the Medici designed a financial system for handling wealth, can we design a system of connection that takes relationship as its primary unit?
I believe we can. And the clue lies in the most painful place of our society. Korea, though it holds world-class medical infrastructure, carries the highest suicide rate in the OECD and the lowest birth rate in the world. The common answer points to the individual — that one must be more resilient. But that is another extraction. It shifts the responsibility for a disease the system made onto the will of the individual. Within a structure of endless competition and comparison, of seeing others as rivals, suicide and ultra-low birth are not individual failures but the signal of a society whose connection is chronically blocked. To not have children in an insecure society is not selfishness but the signal of a system.
So the prescription too must face the system, not the individual. To move responsibility from the individual to the environment. Concretely, it is to reweave time and space and daily life so that people can touch one another — time to rest, a walkable city, a daily life in touch with nature, a media environment that gives recovery rather than comparison. Instead of recommending a gym membership, to plant movement into the design of a city; instead of scolding the will, to make a basic environment where relationship opens. These domains are not abstract virtues but things that can be measured and institutionalized — as the Medici bill of exchange was measured by double-entry bookkeeping and institutionalized by the branch network.
This is only a first blueprint. It is unfinished, and needs further refining. But the Medici too began with a single small bank. A system of connection can begin from one school, one hospital, one city — from a small experiment that asks "is relationship open here?"
But — Has Anyone Ever Done This?
Having written this far, I stopped my pen for a moment. An honest doubt arose. A system that takes relationship as its unit, that binds power to the common good rather than private interest — is this not a mere idealistic fantasy? Has humanity ever, even once, actually drawn such a thing, made it institution, and lived it?
The answer to that doubt was people scattered through history. Those who, having suffered the pain of plunder directly, consciously designed another road. From vast institutions to small tables, people who chose to join without taking. In the next chapter I set out first in search of them. And at the end of that journey I will stand again before the room I saw in Siena a few days ago — the room where humanity painted good government on a wall and sat before it every day.
The People Who Went Toward Mutual Indwelling — Another Road Is Possible
An Evening Harvesting Grapes
It was autumn in Chianti. The grape harvest was in full swing. On every hill people lined up to pick, and baskets went down loaded on tractors. When evening came, a long table was set in the yard of a farmhouse. That year's first wine was poured, and hands that had forgotten, for a while, whose vineyard it was broke the same bread and raised the same cup. The harvest was not a thing done alone. It was a thing done, and eaten, together.
Before that table I recalled a very old scene on the other side of the earth. Twenty-five hundred years ago, a man, having finished a harvest sacrifice, climbed a gate-tower and sighed sorrowfully. The same autumn, the same harvest, yet his sigh was far from the warmth of the feast.
The Man Who Sighed at the Altar of Harvest
The man was Confucius — or precisely, it is a scene the "Liyun" chapter of the Book of Rites (Liji) transmits in Confucius's voice. What he had just finished was a sacrifice giving thanks to the land for a year's farming: the zha (蜡). It was a harvest thanksgiving offered at once to the many deities involved in a year's farming, and at its heart was enshrined the progenitor-deity said to have first taught farming — Xiānsè (先嗇), commonly identified with Shennong (神農).¹ Shennong was the one who taught humanity to farm, and, as another tradition has it, the founder of medicine too, who tasted the hundred herbs with his own body to distinguish drug from poison. He is, in short, a symbol of the one who gave humanity sustenance and care. From that altar of harvest thanksgiving, Confucius came out and, atop the gate, sighed. His disciple Ziyou (子游, Yan Yan), beside him, asked, "Why does the master sigh?"
Confucius spoke of a lost world. When the Great Way was practiced, when all under heaven was shared — tiānxià wéi gōng (天下爲公). Then the worthy and able were chosen, and good faith and concord were taught; and so people did not treat only their own parents as parents, nor only their own children as children (不獨親其親, 不獨子其子). The old finished their lives in peace, the grown had their use, the young grew well, and even the widowed, the orphaned, the alone, and the sick were all provided for (皆有所養). Men had their roles, and women their homes (男有分, 女有歸). They hated to see goods thrown away on the ground, yet did not hoard them for themselves (不必藏於己); they hated to see strength not put forth from the body, yet did not labor only for themselves (不必爲己). And so scheming was shut out and did not arise, and there were no thieves or rebels, and the outer gate was not shut (外戶而不閉). This is called the Great Harmony — Datong (大同).²
I dwell long on the fact that this vision came, of all places, from the altar of Shennong. The picture of a good society was drawn not in a palace but before the god of sustenance and care. And at the heart of Datong is lodged one phrase: all were provided for (皆有所養) — the old, the young, the widowed, the sick. That the measure of a good society is not what its strongest hold but how its weakest are cared for. This is exactly the one thing I have studied all my life: that health is not a property an individual owns but a state arising from how open one's connection is, from how much a society cares for one another. Datong is, so to speak, the oldest blueprint of a health-generating society. A good society grows not from power but from care.
Hands That Tasted the Hundred Herbs
And Shennong himself is the incarnation of that principle. As tradition has it, he tasted the hundred herbs with his own body — poisoned seventy times a day — to distinguish what would save a person from what would kill, and finally fell to a poisonous herb.³ He gained the knowledge of healing by giving his own body as the testing ground.
This scene stands face to face with Chapter 8. There I saw science turned into the alibi of plunder. Race graded into ranks, the rule of the strong insisted on as a law of nature — a pseudo-science, knowledge gained by making the other an object, knowledge that takes. But in the Eastern medicine, in its founder, knowledge is born in the opposite direction — knowledge gained by giving not the other but oneself. To know by taking, and to know by giving — the same word, "knowledge," yet the direction is exactly opposite. Shennong is the oldest antithesis of extractive science. At the origin of healing lies self-giving.
Two Worlds — Datong and Xiaokang
Confucius's sigh runs so deep because, right after Datong, he drew the present world. He called it Xiaokang (小康, Lesser Prosperity). When the Great Way was hidden, all under heaven became a single household (天下爲家). Now people treat only their own parents as parents (各親其親), take goods and strength for themselves (貨力爲己), pass power to their sons (世及), and — ring their walls and moats as fortifications (城郭溝池以爲固). And so scheming arose, and war began from this (謀用是作, 而兵由此起).⁴
Set the two worlds side by side, and this whole book is contained in one passage. If Datong is "all under heaven shared," Xiaokang is "the household's own, inherited." If Datong is "not treating only one's own parents as parents," Xiaokang is "each only his own." If Datong is "not hoarding for oneself," Xiaokang is "goods and strength for oneself." If Datong is "the outer gate not shut," Xiaokang is "guarding oneself with walls and moats."
In that last contrast lies the heart. Walls and moats (城郭溝池) — that is the wall of immunity. The wall raised, to guard oneself, against the other. Datong is a world that needs no such wall (外戶不閉); Xiaokang is a world that guards itself with it. Not to be taken, one must first raise a wall, and the moment one raises a wall, the other becomes not a guest but a threat. The diagnosis (Xiaokang) and the vision (Datong) Confucius drew overlap exactly with what this book has drawn as its diagnosis and its prescription. An old man of the East, twenty-five hundred years ago, had already drawn both pictures in one passage.
Only, one must be honest. Datong is not historical fact. Confucius himself never saw it. He sighed for what was already lost, for what perhaps never fully existed. Moreover this text itself was not written by Confucius. The "Liyun" is taken to be a text compiled centuries after his death, by Confucians who lent their words to his mouth — much of the Confucius of the Book of Rites is later attribution (托名). So Datong is less one man's reminiscence than a dream long held by a tradition, set on the mouth of an ancient sage. Datong is not history but an ideal — a good society humanity imagined and inscribed in writing. As a painter in Siena drew good government on a wall, an old man drew Datong in writing. The West's wall and the East's writing, two good societies. Two civilizations, unknown to each other, inscribed the same dream each in its own place.
But This Is Not an Old Dream Only — It Is the Fact of Life
There is a reason Datong cannot be folded away as a mere unattainable old dream. To dwell within one another is — before it is an ideal — the way life actually works. And this the field of my expertise testifies.
Within every cell of our body there is a mitochondrion, the small power plant that makes the energy by which we breathe and move. But it was not originally part of us. About two billion years ago, a once free-living bacterium entered another cell and, instead of being eaten, chose to live together.⁵ Even now the mitochondrion dwells within our cells, keeping its own DNA. That is, complex life — all animals and plants, ourselves included — is not the sole victor of competition but the product of dwelling within one another. Life leapt forward not by devouring alone but by living together.
Pregnancy is more astonishing still. The mother's immune system, built to attack the foreign, embraces the fetus — half of it a genetic other — without rejecting it. A place where immunity works not as exclusion but as hospitality. And the fetus's cells remain in the mother's body for decades, and the mother's in the child — one body dwelling as a trace within another.⁶ Half the cells in our body are not human. Countless microbes in the gut dwell within us, helping digestion, teaching immunity, and we house and feed them. Strictly, "I" am not one individual but an ecosystem.
In Chapter 8, Social Darwinism said "the rule of the strong is a law of nature." But the deeper truth of life points the opposite way. Life leapt forward not by plunder but by dwelling within one another. Datong is not a vain dream against nature but the deepest grammar of nature transcribed into society. Tellingly, even Shennong's harvest sacrifice seems to have known this. An old record says of that rite that it "welcomed the cat, for it ate the field mice; welcomed the tiger, for it ate the wild boars."⁷ The thanksgiving of harvest reached beyond humans, even to the beasts that helped the farm. Gratitude spreading across the whole food web — that was the ecological ground of Datong.
People Designed It
Then does Datong come of itself? No. It was sighed for, even at Shennong's altar, as already lost. Dwelling within one another is the grammar of nature, but in society it must be consciously designed — as the Medici designed a financial system for handling wealth.
And people really did design it. In 1948, Costa Rica, having ended a civil war, abolished its army. It turned the money that would have been spent on arms toward education and medicine and the environment. That a nation can stand without ruling by force, one small country has proven for more than seventy years.⁸ In 1956, a priest in the Basque country of Spain, on the ruins of civil war, designed cooperatives in which the workers are the owners — Mondragón, where the worker is the member, one member has one vote, and there is a cap on the gap between highest and lowest pay. It saw the person not as a cost but as a member.⁹ Nor need one go far. Old Korean villages had dure and pumasi — a web of reciprocity that shared labor and harvest not as market exchange but as a debt owed to one another. Each household's living was left its own, yet the work was done together.
Yet none of these is complete. Costa Rica has its inequality, Mondragón shakes under market pressure and carries the shadow of non-member labor, and the reciprocity of dure stayed within the village, closed to the outside other. These are no finished paradise. They are only attempts to design, having suffered the pain of plunder directly, another road consciously. And these attempts share one thing. Dwelling within one another does not arise of itself. It must be designed — and it is always unfinished.
But It Is Fragile
Last, I set down the most honest fact. Even such designed mutual flourishing is fragile.
In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, in Toledo, Spain, there was a school of translation. Muslim and Jewish and Christian scholars, in one place, rendered into Latin the Greek knowledge preserved in Arabic. The return-flow we saw in Chapter 7 — the crossroads where the ancient learning the Islamic world had kept came back to Europe — was exactly here. A rare place where three religions collaborated to let knowledge flow. But one must not romanticize that coexistence. It was a coexistence of clear hierarchy, and above all it ended — in 1492, when the Jews and Muslims were expelled.¹⁰ The same year Columbus set sail. In the year one door opened, on the other side a world of coexistence closed.
Shennong too fell to a poisonous herb, and Toledo's coexistence ended in expulsion, and Datong was sighed for as lost. Dwelling within one another is not strong. Because it wraps itself in no wall of immunity, it is always exposed to plunder. So a good society is not something achieved once and finished but something that must be ceaselessly kept. There is a city that painted good government on a wall and yet lost it in the end. To that city we go, in the next chapter.
Closing — An Ancestor Who Belongs to No One
I return to the table in Chianti. The new wine was going round one more time.
I thought again of Shennong. Tellingly, there is a long dispute over which people's ancestor Shennong is. Some see him as the ancestor of the Dongyi (東夷) lineage, and even join him to the Korean people. But this is not a proven scholarly view, only a claim of some, and above all Shennong is a mythic figure to begin with, so to argue the attribution of his blood lies beyond verification. Yet perhaps that very dispute runs against the spirit of Datong. For the vision that "all under heaven is shared" (天下爲公) came from a myth that can be caged as no one's. As Datong said not to privatize all under heaven, Shennong too is not privatized as one people's. As we saw in Chapter 5, what matters is not blood but flow. The dream of a good society, and the one who first spoke it, are no one's sole possession.
On one wall of western Tuscany good government is painted, and in one writing of the East Datong is inscribed. That two civilizations, unknown to each other, dreamed the same dream tells us this dream is not one person's fantasy but a long memory of humanity. The web that takes and the web that joins. Humanity has known both, and made both with its own hands. Then we can make them again.
Darkness fell over the vineyard. The grapes harvested together had become a glass of wine, going round the table. It was an evening that belonged to no one — an evening of all.

The Wall of Siena — The City That Painted Good Government
The Wrong Room
The Palazzo Pubblico of Siena. Inside it I first walked into the wrong room — a room whose ceiling was gilded all over and gorgeous, its vault painted with the grave consuls of ancient Rome, my neck aching from looking up. I turned about for a long while. This was not what I had come for.
Guided, I walked again and at last found the room. Compared with the gorgeous-ceilinged room, its walls were plain and old. No gold, no overwhelming ornament. Only, on three walls, faded frescoes were spread. And yet before those faded walls I came to stand a long while. The Sala dei Nove, or Sala della Pace — the "Room of Peace." There, painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti between 1338 and 1339, was the first full-scale political painting in the history of Western art.¹
If the gorgeous ceiling made one look up at power, this plain wall made one look power in the face. That difference was the whole of this room.
The Three Walls
The room's three walls are one argument.
On one wall is the Allegory of Good Government. At the center sits a dignified old man symbolizing the common good, and beside him the virtues — Justice, Peace, Temperance, Magnanimity — personified and arrayed. The decisive thing is a single cord. A cord loosed from the goddess Justice passes through the hands of the citizens and reaches to the ruler. Ruler and citizens are bound to each other by the cord of justice. It was a declaration that power is legitimate not when it presses down from above but only when it is connected, by that cord, to the citizens.
Turn to the facing wall and the effects of that good government unfold. In the city's streets citizens dance hand in hand. Shops prosper, a scholar teaches, a laborer raises a roof. Beyond the walls well-tended fields spread in abundance, a farmer gathering grain. In the sky a woman, "Securitas" (Security), flies, and over the city gate is inscribed the word "LIBERTAS" — Liberty. Good government was not an abstraction but a concrete scene of dancing streets and ripening fields.
And the third wall, Bad Government. On the throne sits Tyranny (Tyrannis), horned and fanged. At its feet Justice lies fallen, bound. The city is desolate, and violence and fear run in the streets. The cord that, loosed in good government, bound the citizens is here a chain that binds Justice herself.
This third wall was the most effaced of the three. In the poorest state of preservation, Tyranny's face is blurred and the desolate city gone in places. Before it I had, for a moment, an idle thought — as if time had wished to blur away the face of plunder alone. Of course it is only the accident of preservation. But that what remained clearest was the dancing street and what grew faintest was the face of Tyranny gave, for a coincidence, an odd comfort.
The Same Tuscany, the Opposite Design
Before this room I could not but recall Florence.
Florence's Medici designed a system that concentrated power in one family. A refined wheel converting wealth into patronage, patronage into prestige, prestige into hereditary power. It was a design by which one family quietly owned a city.
In the same age, the same Tuscany, Siena was experimenting with the opposite design. The masters of this room were the "Government of the Nine" (Governo dei Nove). From 1287 to 1355, nine members who governed Siena. They were chosen not from the nobility but from the middle-class merchants, and their term was but two months. And during their term they were secluded within this palace, governing without going outside, eating and sleeping together.² A short term, seclusion from the outside, ceaseless rotation — all these devices aimed at one thing: to prevent, by structure itself, power hardening into someone's private interest, corruption taking root.
If the Medici designed a system to concentrate and inherit power, Siena's Nine designed a system to disperse, rotate, and seclude it. On the same soil, at almost the same time, two opposite experiments in governance were under way.
I do not mean to declare which was right. But the contrast itself says something. That a system is not nature but design. That to gather power in one place, and to scatter and rotate it, are both mechanisms humans chose and made. Then we can ask what system to design, and can ask it differently.
To Be Bound by a Cord
Looking again at that wall of good government, I saw there the "connection" I spoke of in the last chapters.
The heart of good government was that single cord — that ruler and citizens are bound to each other by justice. A relation in which no one reduces another to an instrument, and no one dissolves and vanishes into the whole, yet each is joined to the other. That mutually binding cord was the visual figure of "joining" that a fourteenth-century painter could draw.
And the wall of bad government was exactly its opposite. There the cord was not connection but bondage — a chain that binds Justice and casts her down. As the system of plunder always does, tyranny first cuts relationship — binds Justice, disables her — and then takes. If good government is connection, bad government was separation. The contrast of mutual flourishing and plunder was there, exactly, on those two facing walls. Six hundred and eighty-six years ago, a painter had already drawn the two on the walls of one room, and made the rulers sit between them every day.
Peace as a Messenger
The story did not end in the fourteenth century. Siena made the "Peace (Pace)" woman of that wall a messenger to the world. In the year 2000, to the "Manifesto 2000" of UNESCO — the six pledges to move from a culture of violence to a culture of peace, drafted by Nobel Peace laureates together — the officials and citizens of Siena set their names.³
When I learned what the last of those six pledges was, I paused. "Together, to create new forms of solidarity" (creare insieme nuove forme di solidarietà). It was, word for word, the very system of mutual flourishing I had been groping toward in this book.
The peace Lorenzetti painted on a wall in 1338, crossing 662 years, revived in a declaration of 2000, was again speaking of "the reinvention of solidarity." The same vision was crossing the ages like a single messenger. Then perhaps this writing I am setting down on this Tuscan night is also one strand of that long lineage. I did not hold the thought long. Only once, quietly, I felt it so.
What Can Fall
But I cannot close this chapter by beautifying Siena into a utopia. That would be a lie.
The "Nine" were no true democracy. It was a merchant oligarchy, and the nobility and the lower classes were excluded from those nine seats. Even within the harmonious city painted on the wall of good government there was invisible exclusion and hierarchy.
More painfully, that system fell. Just nine years after the fresco was finished, in 1348, the Black Death swept Europe. Nearly half the population of Siena died, and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the painter of that good government, is said to have died of the plague that very year. And in 1355, with the entry of the Holy Roman Emperor, the people rose and the Government of the Nine fell.⁴ A city that carved good government on a wall failed, in the end, to keep it.
Even a system of mutual flourishing is fragile. It can fall — to plague, to uprising, to time. Not to admit this is to make Siena's wall a cheap comfort.
And there is one last shadow. In 1555, after a long siege, Siena was conquered by the Medici of Florence — Cosimo I. A city that would disperse power was, in the end, swallowed by a family that concentrated it. After that Siena changed little. Conquered, it was embalmed as if time had stopped. One of the paradoxical reasons Siena's medieval streets remain so intact today is just this. Victorious Florence went on changing; defeated Siena stopped at the moment of its defeat. The wall that painted good government was preserved, stopped, within that stopped city.
Departing
I left the room. Passing again the gorgeous-ceilinged room, I came down into Siena's narrow lanes. Onto the fan-shaped Campo the afternoon light was falling aslant.
A city that knew how to paint good government. And a city that lost it in the end. Siena taught both at once. A system of mutual flourishing is no utopian fantasy. Humanity has already painted it, made it institution, lived it for an age. But at the same time it is a fragile thing that can fall, that must be kept. Siena's wall was ground for hope and a warning both.
I mean to beautify neither — neither the Medici's gorgeous victory nor Siena's arrested ideal. Only one thing I would hold: that we knew how to paint good government. And that we can paint it again. Carrying that possibility, I left Siena and returned to Chianti.

A Night in Chianti
Back Before the Empty Niche
That night, returned from Siena to Chianti, a glass of wine before me again, I thought a long while of the wall that painted good government. And my mind went back to the place where this journey began: the empty niche of Florence.
This journey began in that room of the Cappella dei Principi — clad in the most costly materials in the world, yet stopped with its protagonists' seats left empty.
Now I see that empty niche differently. It is not merely the place where money ran out. It is the place that shows how a system that has lost its creative vitality stops. Cosimo and Lorenzo, while vitality lasted, invested money in the future — in artists and talent and the city — and turned the wheel. The declining later dukes buried money in the past, in adorning tombs. When an open system closes, when what flowed pools, when what faced the future turns back to the past — the family stopped.
The Medici's empty niche is, then, the place where that connection was blocked. The place where the open circulation — endlessly converting wealth into patronage, patronage into prestige, prestige into power — closed at some moment. That even the most gorgeous system of plunder, losing its openness, stops, that empty niche testifies wordlessly.
It is the same truth Siena's wall taught. Good government, bad government, the Medici wheel, the rotation of the Nine — all were systems humans designed, and all could fall. But there, precisely, is hope. A system is designed, and design can be changed. If the Medici designed a system that extracts wealth, we can design a system that opens relationship. If the empty niche is evidence of closing, we can reweave toward opening.
Before a New Crossroads
Yet this saying — that a system can be rewoven — does not remain a consolation of bygone history. For right now, we stand before another great current: artificial intelligence.
In this journey I saw the same pattern again and again. When the center of gravity shifted, the side that first read the current and redesigned its model rose, and the side that settled into yesterday's success sank. Florence when the axis shifted from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic; Ming when it withdrew of itself the fleet that had roamed the Indian Ocean; Germany today, perfectly optimized to cheap energy and the combustion engine, on the testing ground. AI may be the newest name on that list — the 1492 of our age.
But the deeper lesson this journey taught lies elsewhere. That riding the current first (ability) and to what one puts that force (direction) are separate. Europe rode the current of the great voyages first, but a system that put that force to plunder found, in the end, the plunder returning upon it, festering or collapsing. As we saw, a world that would guard itself with walls and moats calls in, at last, its own scheming and war (Xiaokang). To seize the force first, and to design that force toward mutual flourishing, are different matters.
AI too can split in two directions. One is the road of plunder — a road where a few monopolize, where people's work is replaced and pushed out, where everyone's data is drawn in one direction. The grammar of extraction we saw in earlier chapters returns, this time with the face of an algorithm. The other is the road of mutual flourishing — toward a shared resource used together, a tool that widens human ability rather than pushing it out, a way of thickening relationship and care. The same technology can become walls and moats, or an outer gate left unshut.
So the true question before AI is not "will we win at AI." That is still a question within the grammar of plunder. The true question is this. In which direction will we design AI? Will we weave it as a web that takes, or as a web that joins?
Honestly, that contest is not yet decided. As no one in 1492 was sure of the age of the Atlantic, we do not know the end of this transition. But one thing we know: that its direction is not fixed in advance. It is not nature but design, and the design is in our hands.
I wrote earlier that Siena's "Peace" revived, crossing 662 years, in a declaration of the year 2000. The last of that declaration's six pledges was "to create new forms of solidarity." Perhaps that is exactly the task given us in the age of AI — the reinvention of solidarity. And it is no unattainable dream. Humanity — no, life itself — has long known it. A man of the East inscribed Datong in writing, and a painter of the West drew good government on a wall. Mitochondria chose, two billion years ago, to dwell within one another, and a mother's body embraces the other even now. Mutual flourishing is not something to be newly invented but something forgotten, to be rewritten in the language of a new age — this time in the language of the algorithm.
Two Journeys, Dwelling Within Each Other
The Chianti night deepened. I recalled together this journey through Tuscany and the journey through Peru I had made before.
In Peru I saw the same wave on the shore of the Americas. The silver of Potosí, the enslaved of the Caribbean, the vanished civilization of the Inca. And I learned the identity of that wave — the logic of taking and extracting. In Tuscany I saw the same wave on the shore of Eurasia. The Medici system, the porcelain and silver that flowed East and West, the knot of Goguryeo. Two continents, two shores, yet one and the same wave. No one was outside that wave.
Someday I mean to bind these two journeys into one travelogue — so that Peru and Tuscany, the Americas and Eurasia, may reflect each other within one book. If in Chapter 13 of the Peru book American silver reached the coast of Joseon, in the Tuscany story Joseon's technology made that silver and flowed it to Japan. The two stories are two ends of the same chain. I would let the two books touch each other so — without being confused, without being separated. That, indeed, would be to dwell within one another.
What this journey taught is, in the end, one thing. That every civilization was not an isolated island but a knot in a vast connective web. The Medici, printing, Goguryeo, the Imjin War, the silver of Potosí — all were within one web. The question is not whether we are connected. We are already connected. The question is whether that connection was woven by the logic of plunder or the logic of mutual flourishing.
And that logic — as the Medici showed, as Siena drew — can be designed. If we made it, we can make it again. The web that takes, into a web that dwells within one another. As that painter of Siena drew on a wall 686 years ago, we can draw good government — good connection — again.
Draining my glass, I looked out into the Tuscan dark. Far over the hills of Chianti, stars were coming out. That starlight was the same starlight the nomads who galloped the steppe thousands of years ago, the masons who piled the stones of Florence, the painter who drew peace on the wall of Siena, and the miner dying at Potosí would all have seen. We were all under the same sky, within the same web. How to reweave that web — carrying that question, I close this journey.
As the Peru travelogue closed with the sound of water at Tipón, this journey closes under the starlight of Tuscany. Two sounds, two lights, yet one sky.
